The cartoon is on the issue of the purchase of Alaska. It is weather is was a good idea or not. The cartoonist could be that showing that the purchase of Alaska was a good idea because it is giving us more land. It is also giving us new markets and lots of natural resources. Another view on this could be that Alaska is unnecessary, and the U.S doesn't need that much more land. People may feel that way because they think it is a useless hunk of ice. The cartoonist clearly used labeling for Alaska and Hawaii. He also used an analogy because Alaska is kind of like a new friend, you are unsure of it. This supports my opinion because a new friend does eventually become a close friend. This is how Alaska is actually seen as a state.
