Panama Canal

This political cartoon is about the issue of using Panama as the place where the canal that connects the Atlantic and Pacific should be built. Panama is a colony of Columbia. The cartoonist message is that Roosevelt is a man who actually makes progress. As he talks about it in the carton, he is a man who can make the dirt fly. Another view of the cartoon could be that he is shoveling through Panama and anything that gets in the way of him creating a canal. You can obviously see Roosevelt's size is exaggerated. The cartoonist also add labeling like for the Panama Canal. This cartoon is showing how Roosevelt was a good leader and he is able to get something done. It supports Roosevelt and that in a way means it support imperialism.

This political cartoon is on the Panama canal. Weather it is right or wrong to use Panama as the location of where it should be built. The cartoonist message is showing Roosevelt digging through and building the canal. It also shows Panama happy to be freed from Columbia and they are almost welcoming Roosevelt as he comes to build the canal. Other people may think that he is coming in uninvited because you can see Bogota being buried.  The cartoonist uses labeling when he labels Bogota and he also uses exaggeration. The cartoonist uses symbolism as well because when he shows Bogota being buried it symbolizes  Panama's freedom. This supports my opinion because it is showing Panama being grateful that the U.S is helping them. They don't mind that the U.S wants something in return and overall this is a positive side of imperialism.

Purchase of Alaska

The cartoon is on the issue of the purchase of Alaska. It is weather is was a good idea or not. The cartoonist could be that showing that the purchase of Alaska was a good idea because it is giving us more land. It is also giving us new markets and lots of natural resources. Another view on this could be that Alaska is unnecessary, and the U.S doesn't need that much more land. People may feel that way because they think it is a useless hunk of ice. The cartoonist clearly used labeling for Alaska and Hawaii. He also used an analogy because Alaska is kind of like a new friend, you are unsure of it. This supports my opinion because a new friend does eventually become a close friend. This is how Alaska is actually seen as a state.

Open Door Policy

The issue of the political is the about Open Door Policy. It is the issue of who gets what benefits from China. The cartoonist message is showing how the Open Door Policy play in and is the solution. It is a compromise that all the nations make to the new opportunities China offers. Most people would generally have the same opinion but some would say the U.S benefits the most. I think the policy is completely fair. The cartoonist used labeling to label the country China. The cartoonist also used symbolism when he used a character like Uncle Sam to symbolize a country. This overall supports my opinion because it is showing how imperialism is benefiting all these different countries.

Spanish-American War

The political cartoon is on the issue of the Spanish-American War. The cartoonist message is that the Spanish should respect freedom and independence. If not, the cartoon shows it means war to fight for Cuba's independence. Others may feel that the U.S just is doing that because they want more territory. The U.S is mostly protecting Cuba so they can later have it for themselves. The political cartoon uses labeling when it labels Spain and Cuba. The cartoon also uses symbolism; the us ship symbolizes the power of the U.S. This supports my opinion because it is portraying Spain negatively which supports my opinion. I also think the U.S is mostly trying to help Cuba gain it independence because the U.S was once in the same shoes.

Annexation of Hawaii

This political cartoon is on the situation of the annexation of Hawaii. The debate of weather it is proper to annex Hawaii. The cartoonist message is showing that the annexation of Hawaii has brought us new markets, industries, and prosperity. The cartoon is also showing Hawaii as a daughter of Uncle Sam who personifies the U.S. An other opinion, looking at the Philippines report is going against my opinion because troops are forcefully taking the Philippines. The cartoon uses lots of labeling like for the reports of the U.S colonies. The cartoon uses an analogy when it compares Hawaii to a daughter of Uncle Sam. This cartoon supports my opinion because it is showing how imperialism is positive in many different ways.

Roosevelt Corollary/ Monroe Doctrine

The Monroe Doctrine

This political cartoon is on the issue of the Monroe doctrine and The Roosevelt Corollary. It is also about how the U.S and Europe's relationship is effected from this. The cartoonist message is showing hoe the Roosevelt Corollary took the Monroe Doctrine a step further. An other opinion someone will most likely have of this would be that Roosevelt is being far too defensive. Personally, I think it shows the Roosevelt Corollary in action because the king is trying to interfere. Some techniques the cartoonist is using are labeling of Monroe Doctrine, Republic of Santo Domingo, and the U.S ship. Another technique used is exaggeration, because the cartoon shows the U.S sticking a cannon in Europe's face and ready to fire at any slight movement but that is really not reality. This supports my opinion because it is showing hoe effectively the Roosevelt Corollary is allowing the U.S to keep their territories, and not loose them to Europe.
